Ji Hwan Kang è nato il 20 marzo del 1977. Il suo nome reale è Tae Gyu Jo ed è un attore sud coreano. Ha iniziato la sua carriera di attore recitando nella versione coreana del musical "The Rocky Horror Show" nel 2001. Dopo, ha recitato in piccole parti in popolari drama come Summer Scent (2003), Nonstop 4 (2003), Youth! Fly To The Sky (2004), More Beautiful Than A Flower (2004) e Save the Last Dance for Me (2004).
Ha iniziato ad avere un ruolo da protagonista e ad essere famoso nel 2005 con il drama Be Strong, Geum-soon!, nel quale è co-protagonista con Hye Jin Han. Il suo ruolo in questo drama lo ha fatto diventare famoso anche al di fuori del suo paese, specialmente in Giappone, Cina e Taiwan.
Nel frattempo, il suo primo debutto al cinema è stato con un film independente del 2005 dal titolo Host and Guest diretto dal coreano Dong Il Shin. Questo film è stato molto apprezzato sia in Corea che all'International Film Festival, ed ha partecipato sia al Berlin Film Festival che al The 32nd Seattle Film Festival nel 2006.
